What does EPDM stand for
Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer
What thickness is the EPDM
There are 2 versions available - 1.1mm which is generally used for light / smaller applications 1.6mm which is a heavier grade used for more demanding applications.
How is the EPDM joined
Usually we do not need to join the EPDM as most roofs can be fitted out of a single sheet. If a join is necessary then we either weld the EPDM or splice using the manufacturers preferred joining method
How long does EPDM last
The 1.1mm has a warranty for 20 years and the 1.6mm 30 years. The actual life expectancy of EPDM is projected to be in excess of 50 years
Can the EPDM be layed over existing felt
As a rule , no , but there are exceptions.
- if the existing roof is sound with no leaks then new
boards can be fixed over the existing felt and the EPDM applied to the new solid base.
- If the existing roof is sound and a warm roof is being
constructed then the old felt can be used as a vapour control layer.
- If the existing roof is sound and a green roof or
ballasted system is being applied then EPDM can be loose laid on top of the old roof. The weight of the soil mix or ballast will retain the EPDM in position.
What thickness boards are required
We always use 18mm as in our experience anything else is not strong enough
How is the EPDM fixed
The EPDM is usually fully bonded to the new roof deck using propitiatory adhesives. In the case of a green roof or ballasted system the EPDM may be partially adhered.
What happens at the edges?
The EPDM is dressed over the edges and a specially designed trim is applied either to direct any water in to the gutter or act as a kerb to prevent water running down the fascias/walls.
What maintenance is required
Apart from sweeping off a few leaves in Autumn , nothing.
Can the EPDM be repaired if damaged
Repairing an EPDM roof is very easy as a patch can simply be over laid
Can i walk on the roof
Yes , as the EPDM is extremely tough. Care should be taken if a sharp edge of a ladder is placed on the roof or the roof area is used for storage purposes.
If area is to be used as a balcony or heavy foot traffic is expected then specially designed non slip walkway mats can be installed
Can a deck be fitted over the roof
Yes , fitting decking over EPDM is very straight forward and can be easily installed at any time with out penetrating the roof.
What happens round skylights / pipes etc
Specialised flashing is applied to any protrusions that moulds to the shape of the object. This flashing cures in-situ to provide a secure and long lasting waterproof seal integral to the roof.
under a green roof
EPDM and green roofs work perfectly together
Where can i use EPDM
Repairing a flat roof , replacing a flat roof , on warm roof , repairing a roof valley or under a green roof , EPDM is very versatile and can be used in many different applications
