A green roof is made up of a number of distinct sections. However the most important section
by far has to be the waterproofing under the green roof. K1 Roofing can install the
waterproofing and green roof to provide you a guaranteed combined solution
Construction of a Green Roof
can weigh well over 150kg per sqm.

Providing structure is sound then the next layer to consider is insulation. This can be either a
information.

Next is the waterproof membrane. K1 only use EPDM as a waterproofing membrane simply
because it is the best product to use. K1 will install the entire roof assembly from the joists
upwards.

Once the roof is waterproof and able to survive 25yrs+  then the green roof can be applied.
First a roof barrier is sometimes applied depending on the base membrane. Hertalan EPDM
does not require the use of a root barrier.

Next is a protective fleece layer. This help retain moisture and products the membrane from
abrasives particles .

The we have the drainage layer. A good drainage layer can retain enough water to feed an
extensive roof for over 2 months. It also ensures the soil does not become saturated hence
prevents the roots of the plants rotting.

On the drainage layer is a second protective fleece. This is to allow the drainage board to
function properly and not become clogged with soil over its lifetime.

The we have the growing medium/ substrate. This is where it all happens. Typically the soil is low
in nutrients providing just enough to sustain the plants we want and helping keep out the
plants/weeds we don't. A well installed roof will require virtually no maintenance , no watering
and no additional fertilisers. The roof should be totally sustainable.

Finally we have the plants. At K1 we like to add some diversity to our roofs so we like to mix
wildflower with sedum as well as placing a few strategic logs and pipes to encourage
invertebrates and other interesting visitors. We can design you roof however you wish.

A green roof is very much a living roof.
